The Two Gentlemen of Verona
by William Shakespeare
directed by PJ Paparelli
Lansburgh Theatre

Possibly Shakespeare’s earliest romantic comedy, The Two Gentlemen of Verona centers on Valentine and Proteus, loyal friends who are transformed into enemies thanks to their fickle hearts. After traveling to Milan, Valentine falls in love with the Duke’s daughter, Silvia. By chance or fate, Proteus also falls in love with her, forsaking the woman he left behind in Verona. A jealous Proteus betrays his friend’s plan to elope with Silvia, and the Duke banishes Valentine. Should Valentine and Proteus sacrifice their friendship for desire, or can they somehow find a compromise? This adventurous, romantic story has it all—hidden identities, comedy, a gang of gentlemen outlaws—even a double wedding.

The Comedy of Errors
by William Shakespeare
NTLive
Sidney Harman Hall

Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound.

Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse.

The Servant of Two Masters
by Carlo Goldoni
adapted by Constance Congdon
directed by Christopher Bayes
Lansburgh Theatre

Identities are mistaken, engagements are broken and lovers are reunited in Carlo Goldoni’s commedia dell’arte masterpiece. Mayhem erupts when the wily—and chronically hungry—servant Truffaldino hatches a zany scheme to double his wages (and his meals) by serving two masters at once. The New York Times declared, “The laughter would be quite enough to propel The Servant of Two Masters onto a theater lover’s must-see list. But then there’s the magic… Now that’s theater!”

Petrushka
By Basil Twist
Lansburgh Theatre

Petrushka tells a tragic love story, set among three puppets at a Russian carnival. Petrushka, the clown, falls in love with the winsome Ballerina at first sight. The conniving and rich Moor loves the Ballerina as well, and seduces her with beautiful things. She rejects the earnest advances of Petrushka, who, upset and lonely, confronts the Moor. Have these puppets come to life, or are they merely playing out a story being told? Reality and magic are woven together with the deft hand of Basil Twist, against the backdrop of Stravinsky’s classic and moving score.

What people are saying about SHAKESPEARIENCE:

“The SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinee Program has brought rigor and enthusiasm for the Arts and Literature that one would never expect to see in a high school environment…My success depends on the SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinee Program…the program is about experience and learning, establishing relationships between community members and students in life long and unforgettable experiences…”

School Without Walls (DC Public Schools)

“The program was so well though out;  from the literature you sent for the students, to the artist visit, to the performance itself and then the workshop the students participated in after the show-everything was purposeful and creative.  Capital City Public Charter School is a Title 1 school and most of our students would not have been able to afford to go to see As You Like It.  I really appreciated the financial help and the user-friendly application process.  My students are still talking about their visit.  For some of them, this was the first time they had been to a professional theatre and for all of them it was the first time they had the opportunity to meet and question the actors after the show.  I want to thank you for the on-going communication with your office; the program is so well organized and helpful and all my questions were always answered so quickly.  Thank you again for a wonderful experience and I hope to have future classes participate again!

“T.C. Williams High School enjoys a very diverse student body…while some of our students may have heard of Shakespeare in their countries, few of them have had the opportunity to read Shakespeare’s works in translation or otherwise.  The SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinee Program provides a valuable introduction to the live performance of Shakespeare.  For some of our students this is their first experience with any kind of live professional theatre.  The “talk back” opportunity with the actors after the performance has been particularly valuable for T.C. Williams students…the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s educational programs have opened up a new world for our students…”
